For Wednesday, class meets in Innovation Hall, Room 327! Also, please be sure to read the following, which I have sent to you via email (if you did not receive it, please email me):
- “Academically Speaking: Audience, Language, Power” from Frame Work: Culture, Storytelling, and College Writing (sent via email to your gmu account).
For Friday, please read:
- A Writer’s Reference Chapter: Composing and Revising, sections C1-C4.
Since we are all new to one another, let’s start off this blog by introducing ourselves. Tell us who you are, where you’re from, what your major is (or might be), and perhaps something about your hobbies, interests outside the classroom, or whatever else you think will help us better know who you are. If you have any particularly interesting story (or recent event you experienced), please feel free to share. I really don’t have any particular “format” in mind, so feel free to also be creative with this assignment — let your voice come to the surface!

Alright, so I am Kyle Crumbley and I’m from the
75 7 representing the YC (York county). My major is Administration of Justice. I want this major because I want to be in the FBI after college. So I love the Washington Redskins, so for all you redskin haters I’ll just ignore your crap because the skins are the best. I enjoy listening to music. I like the classics like Led Zeplin and Pink Floyd but I’ll listen to some new stuff like The Foo fighters and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I also like watching 24, Heroes, Scrubs, and the Office. Thos are some of the coolest shows ever. I am also a huge Chuck Norris fan. Uh interesting stories? Well my prom kinda suck but it is kind of funny. Like First the girl I ask “suddenly” went to New York the same day as prom so I was left alone prom night driving a mini van that broke down after the prom so I was stranded for a while. After looking back it was kind of funny but it wasn’t on that night. Well I really don’t have any other “interesting” stories except for counting cards on weekends at Vegas, but I think someone work a book or made a movie so thats plagiarism, I think. Well I guess thats about it, uh I hope I get an A and go Patriots, peace out

Hey ya’ll,
Erm, I mean, hello fellow… no that didn’t come out right either… let me try again.
Hello my esteemed… no.
Okay… I have it now, here goes…
Hi! (That sounds about right) My name is Katie (not Katherine, I tend to throw a fit when people call me Katherine) Prescott. I turned 18 exactly ten days ago and I am a freshmen at George Mason. (Woot!)
I am an Administration of Justice major with (hopefully) a biology minor. I hope to either get a job with the CIA, or a job as a homicide detective or psychological profiler after I graduate. But who knows? They say that the average college student changes their major like three times, right?
So this is kind of awkward because I’m talking about myself and no one is talking back. If we were doing this in person I would have yelled something like “Rawr” or “Woot” or broken into a spontaneous dance right about now just to deal with the awkward…ness.
Contrary to what you might gather from this response I am actually a pretty good writer and public speaker. And better yet, I like doing both of those things.
Now I guess to tell you more about myself… I usually don’t think before I speak and I am technologically impared. I can not cook to save my life, and my favorite color is purple. I like Twizzlers and Coke in glass bottles, singing into my hairbrush and dancing around in my underwear, swinging on swing sets and getting lost in big cities, making crazy mixed tapes and even crazier videos with my friends, giving hugs and getting kisses, watching old movies and myspace stalking Johnny Depp, picking daisies and making dandelion chains, thunderstorms and old blue jeans, arguing and making up, playing with dogs and a good book, summer nights and snow storms, friends and family, holding hands and skipping class (just not my college classes), saying “yo” and making people smile.
And that’s pretty much me in a nutshell. I’m rather hyper, I guess I didn’t tell you that. If you want to know anything else just ask me.

Yo, whats up? My name is Sadaf Hasnain and I’m from right here in C-ville VA, like a ten minute drive from mason. I was born in Pakistan. My major is Bio as of now but it’s quite questionable and subject to change. I am a drug pusher (read:Pharmacy Technician)
I am an avid music fan, I listen to pretty much anything except like metal and scremo (give or take a few). I like to sing, dance, read, write, sleep, and probably sleep some more.
I pretty much worked my butt off this summer so I dont really have any interesting stories. I can be really loud sometimes, so I apologize ahead of time. Well I look forward to this class and I hope I pass with an A.
Alright, peace out.

Hellohello!
My name is Vicki Vuong and I am an accounting and business major. Since the fine arts have stuck to me like an unforgiving leech, I’m currently considering minoring in fine arts/dance.
I love band, play the flute, am a beginner in percussion, and am in the color guard. I am also taking intro to modern dance and university chorale as well!
Fine arts classes are very fun and its just that little something you need for your soul.
I live in Fairfax, about 20 miles away from campus and am rooming with my best friend Katie in Commons
We have been having an amazing time ever since we moved in and we’ve met new people EVERY DAY! College is so much fun
And everyone is so nice.
I am extremely friendly all around and I love meeting new people! I like to be silly when I’m comfortable enough with a group of friends.
This summer I went to Ocean City! Has anyone ever chilled at the beach at night until 3am? It is so beautiful with the moon shining on the water, every star is shining brightly in the sky, and you can fly a kite! I named mine Oswald and he flew as high as the condo I stayed at.
I also went to Disney World for a week with 3 other friends and we visited a park a day. I can’t swim! Typhoon Lagoon’s wavepool-the one with the huge BOOM! and the HUGEEE wave that sucks everyone in, just wow, it was pretty scary. We stayed up until 4am every night eating self-made nachos and watching Disney movies and being silly.
I can’t wait until I become familiar with everyone! I’m really excited for class and I already met two commuters in our class, Steven and I’m sorry whoever you are but I forgot your name! :’(
I tend to ramble a lot because I’m used to typing extremely long blogs when I had one…..so to make it short! I love chocolate and cats but am allergic to them! I love daisies the most, marching band(NOT a band geek), chili, cake batter ice cream, ZESTY italian dressing, making people happy, Chipotle, flair bartending and PSYCH!!!!! BEST SHOW EVER!
Alright this is getting too long…bye!

bheflin // August 26, 2008 at 10:18 am |
Hi all!
I’m Ben Heflin coming all the way from Stockton, California. I’m currently enrolled in the School of Management, but have yet to pick a specific business major. From what I’ve heard and researched, Mason has a very strong business program, so I definitely look forward to what lies in store for me here.
In my free time, which sadly wasn’t much these past few years, I mostly like to play sports. I have to say that ultimate frisbee is probably my favorite, but all sports appeal to me. And of course I love chilling with my friends and going out to one of our awesome cali beaches.
nmalliar // August 26, 2008 at 12:19 pm |
Hello, my name is Nick Malliarakis and I am a freshman here at GMU. I graduated from Menchville High School in Newport News, Va. I plan on majoring in economics but I dont know if calculus will allow me to do so, so I guess we will see. I love most all sports and I hope to get to know all of you. Bye
chkimi2 // August 26, 2008 at 12:30 pm |
Hello~ My name is Christine Kim and I’m 18 years old. I currently live in Annandale and commute to GMU. I’m 100% Korean but sadly I haven’t gone to Korea in a while. As for my studies, I’m confused and undeclared about what I want to do. I’m thinking I’ll probably study Accounting or History, but who knows what’ll happen.
During my free time I usually like to play a lot of video games. I know I’m addicted to them but I can’t help it. I love to watch TONS of scary movies even though I have nightmares the following night. I also love to bake goods and I’m pretty good at it. Except that one time… where I was sick and couldn’t smell the burning of the cookies. What happened after that? Let’s just say, my mom was not a happy person.
I’m really shy at first but once I get to know someone I’m really not as shy. I’m very cranky in the morning because I want my sleep! But I try my best not to be cranky. I love to meet new people so hopefully I can get to know everyone by the end of the semester. Well, that’s about all I have to say. Bye~
mxwilchek // August 26, 2008 at 2:30 pm |
Hi, my name is Matt Wilchek
I’m from Glastonbury, CT right by Hartford.
I’m one of those people when u first meet that doesn’t say too much, but once I become more comfortable with every1 u’ll get to know me even better.
This summer I just worked and hung out with friends. I also went to 3 concerts. One with Stone Temple Pilots, another with Linkin Park, Chris Cornell, The Bravery, and Busta Rhymes. And the other concert was O.A.R, all phenominal.
My hobbies include soccer, snowboarding, fencing, paintball, weight lifting and I rly love making movies ecspecially action.
Saying that most would assume i’m majoring in film, but alas i’m not
I’m majoring in Global Affairs and hope to be minoring in the Arabic forgien language. One summer i did a 2 week program at American University called the NSLC, basically a 2 week intro to national security and intell. Throughout the 2 weeks we went on trips to different areas of D.C. which include the Pentagon, the Holocaust museum, capital Hill, NSA, and my favirote CIA headquarters in Langley. After that trip my goal is to walk through one of those governmental agencies not as a tourist but as an employee.
I don’t rly know wat else to say soooo…there. >.>
apiccioni // August 26, 2008 at 4:26 pm |
Hi! My name is Alycia Piccioni and I’m from Virginia Beach, VA. I live in Lincoln and I’m rooming with my best friend, Courtney. I’m majoring in management with a concentration in health science. I’m also planning to take some fashion merchandising courses at the Art Institute in D.C. next semester. I’m the youngest of four so I grew up with a huge family and there was constant chaos in my house. I’m Italian but ironically I hate lasagna. My family is ridiculously close and we talk to each other at least once a day. People say I laugh too much but I think they don’t laugh enough. I am probably the most indecisive person you will ever meet. I used to be really scared of dogs because when I was five a dog chased me down the street and bit me. But I have since gotten over that fear and now my family has three dogs. I love living only five minutes away from the beach but I prefer colder weather. In my spare time I love taking photographs, going to concerts, and just hanging out. So I guess that about sums me up for now! Bye
mikeb89 // August 26, 2008 at 6:12 pm |
wow people talk alot about themselves, so i’ll keep this one nice and short.
I’m Mike, I like sports, play piano and video games, go to church, and love music. I’m also half canadian, so that makes me half… uhh whatever people say about canadians.
Also I go to school every once and again.
Ummmm… I never liked describing myself.
ssinghq // August 26, 2008 at 7:27 pm |
Hi everyone! I’m Sandeep Singh. However, people prefer calling me Deep/ Harry for some weird reason.
I live in springfield which is like fifteen minutes away from the campus. For the time being, my major is bio- chem. I love playing any kind of sports, listening to music and hanging out with friends. I think thats pretty much it for now..bye
ncicalese // August 26, 2008 at 9:55 pm |
Hey! I’m Natalie Cicalese and I’m from Easton, Pennsylvania. I love it here. I came from a pretty small high school, but I like the feeling of a big campus. I’m a Chemistry major. I’m more interested in the forensics side. I want to work in a forensics crime lab. Anyway, I live in a triple in DUCC and it’s a lot more fun than I first thought it would be. Yeah, there’s not a lot of space but we all get along, it’s great! I like to dance, hang out with my friends, go to the beach, listen to music, and go to concerts. Summer is my favorite season. I’m usually quiet around people until I get to know them better. And I do have a funny story.. well me and my best friend went to a concert. We go inside and get our seats and then I realized I forgot something. So I was freaking out and we decided to go back to the car. As we’re walking outside, my friend sees this sign that says No Re-Entry, but doesn’t mention it until we had already shut the door. Now while we’re walking to the car, we start to panic. When we got back to the building, we’re told our tickets won’t scan again if they already were. So we went to the box office and they told us we weren’t allowed to go back inside, so we started panicing/crying while trying to explain to these people that we were just inside and could get a witness. Still nothing happened.. but then this guy who worked there came out and bought us two tickets. And they were even better than our first ones!!! So it was a bad day that turned into a great day! haha Okay that’s it. byeee!

Hello,
My name is, Peter Deutsch. I was born in Fairfax, but moved to Indiana when I was a child for various reason unknown to me. I decided to come to Mason because of their strong academics, and also to wrestle for the Patriots.
So far I love it here, there’s never a dull moment. From where I came from in Indiana there’s 8k people who reside there, pretty lame I know.
My major is Management, and I would like to move to North Shore, HI after I graduate because surfing is truly where my heart lies. Anyways, I’m sure I’ll have a grand time getting to know all of you.

Yo? Hi? Hello? Morning? Afternoon? Evening?………………………..meh w/e
Oiy! ^.^ My name is Steven Nguyen nice to meetcha. . .whoever you are. . .that’s reading this o_O. . .I guess you wana know a little bit about me, well, I’m Vietnamese .(WOO AZN PRIDE?) (My girlfriend’s mom said to her (after I met her mom) . . .”He’s really polite, nice, he’s welcome to come over anytime if he wants to . . .but he has really small eyes” lol – I guess that’s why my HS teachers kept thinking I was asleep when I was really awake. . .) I’m eighteen and I live in Falls Church fifteen minutes away from GMU so I have to commute; (parents don’t wana pay for dorms anyway . . .sigh -_-) and my major is Information Technology.
Hmm, hobbies? Well, in High School I did Wrestling for two years and Lacrosse (Long Stick Middy FTW) for four years. I also taught myself how to play piano after taking three days of piano lessons then quitting. I love to play DDR (any version) even though I can’t beat most “Standard Level” songs, but its fun anyway
. Ask me to play any video games I’ll gladly accept (usually:)). Sometimes after I finish all my classes I go bowling at Bowl America with people (its impossible for me to bowl straight so I use a bowling ball with two holes instead of three ^^).
Heh, stories . . .do you mean things like: Jumping off a two-story house roof after being chased by a hive of hornets on my lunch break? Or before a Lacrosse game getting eight people into a 5-passenger car just to go get a snack and getting caught by the school police? Breaking the school windows while playing La-Crotchet-Ball? Climbing on the school roof during class times running around then eventually jumping off into a courtyard with NO DOORS by accident?! Maybe the hilarious events that happened in the two years I’ve wrestled at Marshall? Hmm, I don’t know I guess I have a lot of stories . . .don’t know if you’d like them oh well w/e. ^^ (Can’t believe I wrote this much)
Real Life: Quiet – Online: Spammer
P.S. Whatever I write here I won’t remember a single word that I put in here after I submit this. (bO_O)b KIRBY!!!
sohaiba // August 28, 2008 at 10:29 am |
Good morning, and incase I don’t see ya, good afternoon, evening and good night.
Im Sohaib Akhter, a 16 year old Muslim American from Maryland. I have a twin brother, and two sisters. Though I was born here, my family and I moved to Saudi when I was 4 and I went there for 11 years! 11 LONG YEARS” at least we got cheap oil right.
I majoring…,well trying to, in biomedical engineering. I have always been fasinated with cyber-prosthetic devices that I see in movies expecially the ones Silver had in treasure planet. Basically the whole Bigger-Faster-Stronger thing.
I have only two hobbies, modifying Devices, whether it be mobile phones, computers, of calculators, and hanging with friends. The unforgiving sun in the desert of Saudi made it impossibe to do many outdoor sports, and having to study for london board examinations sucked every last minute of my free time.
The laws in saudi don’t prevent piracy, fraud, any form of cybercrime. However, if you’re seen with a member from the opposite sex that is not of your family, you’re put into jail for 3 months! This all contributed to me developing my relationship with electronics and computers.
In saudi, my brother and I started an orginazation of indivisiuals with skills in these sorts of areas. Lockpicking, Forgery, Piracy and Hacking are only few of our specialties. Apart from all this, my brother and I are really like…. well brothers. we almost never argue and we’re always there to cover eachothers’ back.
Believe me, I have a lot of stories to tell. You may see them in some of my other posts. Thanks for listening.
abigailchavez // August 31, 2008 at 10:16 pm |
Bolivian American that’s me! =)
Born in Arlington county and came to Annandale at age 8. I ended up at Mason where I hope to major in Political Science, to be specific International and Government Politics. Yup that’s my thing since I, Abigail am not too smart for math or science I figured that Social Sciences and English were my things.
Well like most teens, I enjoy hanging out with the homies ( really good friends)…you know going to the movies, partying, clubbing….talking on the phone, texting….basically just regular teen stuff. However, I also do have my smarts I really really really love writing lyrics, or poems whichever….it’s a way to express my emotions so that they won’t be bottled and therefore not drive me insane.
BOLIVIA BOLIVIA BOLIVIA, a passion to represent my country, my culture, my people! I most definitely enjoy listening to Bolivian music, but sadly I have yet to learn to dance these beautiful folkloric intangible dances, except for one, DIABLADA. This is my dance, my father founded the group here in VA back in 98′ and ever since then I have been dancing it. As a matter of fact I am currently writing this blog about myself, but thinking back to only mere hours ago when I was having the time of my life at the Bolivian Festival held in Manasas.
Well that’s basically all there is to know about me, Abigail Chavez, an 18 year Freshman at GMU who’s Bolivian American.
thanks for hearing me out
Deuces!
